How to manage my feet if I have Diabetes?
Diabetic foot describes the foot of a diabetic patient that has a potential risk of pathologic consequences, including infection, ulceration, and destruction of deep tissues associated with neurologic abnormalities, various degrees of peripheral arterial disease, and metabolic complications of diabetes in the lower limb (from the World Health Organization definition).
Few tips:
· Inspect your foot daily
· Wash your feet in lukewarm water
· Be gentle when bathing your feet
· Moisturize your feet- but not between toes
· Cut nails carefully- and straight across
· Never trim corns or calluses
· Wear clean dry socks
· Shake your shoes and inspect the inside before wearing
· Never walk barefoot. Not even at home!
· When you meet your doctor, make sure you get your sensations, vascularity, and skin integrity checked thoroughly.
